Dr. Priya Sumithran

Dr Priya Sumithran (MBBS (Hons), FRACP, PhD) is a clinician researcher, with roles as an endocrinologist at Austin Health, and a senior research fellow in the Centre for Research and Education in Diabetes and Obesity at the University of Melbourne, Department of Medicine (Austin). Her clinical work focuses on the care of people with obesity and its complications, and her research interests are in the regulation of body weight, and improving treatment outcomes for people with obesity.
Dr Sumithran has received a number of awards for research, including ‘Best Clinical Paper’ at the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS) annual scientific meeting (2010), the Endocrine Society of Australia/Servier Young Investigator award (2012) and the Bupa Health Foundation Emerging Health Researcher of the Year (2012). Her research has been published in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, and the Medical Journal of Australia.
Dr Sumithran is on the council of the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society, and is a member of the Endocrine Society of Australia, Australian Diabetes Society, and The Obesity Society (U.S.).
