Whatever your situation, we have a range of pricing solutions to help you start your journey.

Melbourne Weight Loss Surgery acknowledges the importance of long-term follow-up, which is why our surgery price includes long-term follow-up with your Surgeon, Dietitian and Practice Nurse, as well as access to our psychology and exercise team.

Private Health Cover*

Starting from:

$6,700

We encourage our patients to have private health insurance, which includes cover for bariatric procedures in a private hospital setting (often only available under Gold cover or equivalent). Check with your provider if bariatric surgery is covered.

Most providers require a waiting period of 12 months before having your operation. You can still see our team before 12 months have passed so you’re ready to go when your insurance is valid.

Private health item numbers: Sleeve Gastrectomy: 31575, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: 31572, Single Anastomosis Gastric Bypass: 31578, Adjustable Band: 31569

What if I don’t have private health cover?

We recommend patients obtain the required level of private health insurance and wait out the required waiting period. Whilst the typical 12-month waiting period can feel disheartening, it is still a much faster route to surgery than through the public system, where the waiting period is often many years.

Self-Funding*

Starting from:

$27,000

In some circumstances, after initial consultation and discussion with the surgeon, self-funding may be considered. Self funding is associated with high costs, which include; hospital fees, theatre fees, surgical equipment, surgeon and anaesthetic costs, and in some circumstances, an ICU bed. The fees for these services can be difficult to definitively predict and can ultimately amount to tens of thousands of dollars.

Can I use my Superannuation?

You may be able to apply for early release of your Superannuation to cover a significant portion of the cost of surgery. This involves completing an application form and obtaining a written letter of support from your GP and your surgeon.

There is a variable wait period whilst your application is reviewed and then, if approved, a wait period before funds become available in your bank account. You may need to meet certain eligibility criteria to be approved for early release of super.

We have partnered with SuperCare to assist you with obtaining funds from your superannuation for surgery. SuperCare streamlines your application process and operates on a ‘no approval, no fee’ basis. To get started with SuperCare, please contact our clinic admin team for more information.

Public System

N/A

For patients who wish to have their procedure in the public system, a referral will need to be sourced from their GP to a public hospital that provides a weight loss service. The fax numbers for the public clinics which we have experience with are:

  • Box Hill Hospital Weight Loss Surgery Clinic (03) 9895 4852

  • St Vincent’s Hospital Metabolic Clinic (03) 9231 3221

  • Alfred Hospital Bariatric Clinic (03) 9076 6938

How long will I have to wait for surgery through the public system?

Wait times can greatly vary, however, most patients find they often wait many years (in some cases 5+ years) before they are able to have their surgery.

*Prices start at the cost listed and may vary depending on your individual circumstances. Appropriate assessment & criteria apply.
